![]() In a lot of the music that we make, there's hope, but it's only hopeful because we presented the bad. Even with the emotional depth to your lyrics, you're still presenting them in a way that says “you can get through this."Ī: It's a rebellious move even to be a musician and to hope that you make it. Q: I hear the theme of resilience in your music. With our songs, to do that in different ways was an interesting pursuit, trying to write songs that had real pain and real stories in them but that wash over you if you're not paying too close attention. You can have it wash over a listener, but now you’ve brought them a new taste, but it's not so avant-garde that they tune it out right away. ![]() Then they go into four-four, and all of a sudden it feels easy. ![]() Most people don't want to listen to something in seven-eight, where it feels like a hiccup. Q: Would you say your pairing of emotional lyrics with pop and minimalist themes is on purpose?Ī: What shifted it for me was songs like “All You Need Is Love” by the Beatles. New York has a huge reputation, but I think musicians come from so many different random cities. It's where I met not only my wife within the first month, but a bunch of amazing musicians that I had kind of written off. Moving to Denver was beautiful because it was a super friendly place. And all these clubs that I wanted to get in kept saying no. So for me, it was an easy choice to leave New York, even though the dream felt crushed. But it was a tough experience because you end up having no time for music because you're working so many jobs just to pull down the rent. How do you think that search for your proper audience affected your songwriting?Ī: We grew up in New Jersey, and I moved to New York for about a year. Q: In your early days, you tried to find your happy medium between a big music town and an up and coming city. A: They had piles and piles of vintage guitars.
